Best practices when filing returns

Here are our recommendations when filing returns with Anrok to ensure a successful tax review:

Schedule time Check transactions Review payment(s)

Most companies will have some monthly, quarterly, and annual returns depending on the jurisdictions in which they file. You can expect at least one return to review each month. Anrok will send an auto-email out when you have returns ready_for_review_status_anrok.png. However, it is best practice to schedule some time to review your returns within the first five days of the month. See Review returns ready for filing.

Ensuring returns accurately reflect your transactions is vital for maintaining compliance and financial transparency. You can do so by checking the following:

Once a return has been filed_status_anrok.png and received by the jurisdiction, you can review the finalized return. An essential part of this review process is examining differences between amounts collected from customers for tax and the amounts ultimately due and payable to a jurisdiction. Filing returns FAQs

We understand you may have questions related to filing returns in Anrok. Many of these questions are common, so let's work through some of these commonly asked questions together:

What does my return status mean?

open_status_anrok.png A return with the status of Open is a return that we are still in the period for which the return relates. For example, if you are a monthly filer viewing the February 2022 return on February 12th, 2022, the return status will be open. Anrok will automatically add new transactions to the return if the transactions received are relevant to the return period.

ready_for_review_status_anrok.png A return with the status of Ready for review means that the period for which the return relates has ended. For example, if you are a monthly filer, an Open return will flip to Ready for Review at the close of the month. New transactions received by Anrok that are relevant to the period are still automatically added to the return.

CleanShot 2025-11-04 at 13.18.15@2x.png A return with the status of Locked for review means that the period for which the return relates has ended, and the return has been manually locked. This means that new transactions received by Anrok that are relevant to the period will not be included in the return.

approved_for_easyfile_status_anrok.png A return with the status of Approved for Easyfile is closed and will not add additional transactions. Anrok will file these returns, and the tax due will be remitted on time to the respective jurisdiction by Anrok. At this point, Anrok will require no further action from you.

CleanShot 2025-10-11 at 20.38.24@2x.png — A return with the status of Ready to file is a global return that has been approved by your team, and is ready for you or an Anrok partner to file on the global jurisdiction's filing portal. This return is closed and will not add additional transactions. Once you've filed this return, you will then need to manually record the filing in Anrok. See Manually record your filed VAT returns.

CleanShot 2024-01-09 at 11.17.30@2x.pngA return with the status of Preparing return is in the process of being drafted and filed. During this stage, you should expect to see funds being pulled from your bank account on file for the return.

filed_status_anrok.pngA return with the status of Filed has been submitted to the jurisdiction. You can always view this return to see what was included in the return.

CleanShot 2025-10-10 at 13.57.31@2x.pngA return with the status of Not filed by Anrok has been submitted to the jurisdiction by a party outside of Anrok. This often occurs when you've opted for yourself or an outside party to file the return independently from Anrok.

CleanShot 2025-10-10 at 13.57.08@2x.png — A return with the status of Collections payment failed is a return where Anrok was unable to pull the funds required to remit payment. If a return has this status, you should update the bank account listed on your account immediately. You can then email taxnotices@anrok.com to notify our Filing team to reinitiate the bank processing. See Change your bank account.

CleanShot 2024-08-29 at 12.39.26@2x.png — A return with the status of Blocked is a return that Anrok is unable to file. This is usually a result of our Tax team being unable to access your sales tax account, which is required to file the return. We recommend connecting with the jurisdiction to provide Anrok access to your account. Please email registrations@anrok.com with the account access information required.

How long do I have to review my return(s)?

Anrok provides five business days — eight business days for customers on Anrok's Growth plan — to review and approve their prepared sales tax returns. At the beginning of each month, you will receive an email notification of any returns ready for review, along with the auto-approval timeframe. See Manage your email notifications.

If you do not approve your return within the review period, the return will automatically flip to an  approved_for_easyfile_status_anrok.png status. The auto-approval process helps to ensure that Anrok always files your returns on time.

During this review period, Anrok will continue to add transactions back-dated within the period to the return until the return is approved by the customer or automatically approved at the close of the review period.

When and in what format does Anrok pull funds from my account for returns?

Once a return has been approved and drafted in the CleanShot 2024-01-09 at 11.17.30@2x.png status, Anrok will pull the funds for the return from your bank account. Generally, this occurs within 48 hours of a return being in a approved_for_easyfile_status_anrok.png status.

Anrok will make a separate funds pull for each filed return, with the memo field labeled by jurisdiction — which means you can easily track which debit ties to which return.
