Connect Anrok to your AI assistant

Introduction

Connecting Anrok to an AI assistant lets you ask questions about your account — your returns, transactions, jurisdictions, and more — and take actions in Anrok from your AI client using plain language. The connection uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets AI clients securely read from and act on external tools like Anrok.

You connect with your own Anrok login rather than an API key, so your access through the connection matches your role in Anrok — the assistant can see and do only what you can.

Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, and other MCP-compatible clients can all connect to the Anrok MCP server at https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp. The sections below cover each one.

Before you start

To connect Anrok to an AI assistant, you'll need the following:

  • An Anrok login on the account you want to connect — Your access through the connection matches your role in Anrok. If you're not a user on the account yet, ask an Anrok Admin to add you under Settings > Team.
  • An Anrok plan that includes MCP access — Contact your Anrok account team if you're not sure whether your plan includes it.

  • An AI client that supports remote MCP servers — Claude, ChatGPT, and Claude Code are covered below, along with general steps for other MCP clients. Who does the setup depends on the client and plan.

There's nothing to install or allowlist for Claude or ChatGPT. The connection to Anrok comes from Anthropic's or OpenAI's servers, not from your computer or your network. Desktop tools such as Claude Code connect from your machine over HTTPS.

The table below summarizes who sets up the connection for each client:

Client Who sets it up Plan notes
Claude (web, desktop, mobile) Team and Enterprise: an Owner adds the connector, then each user connects. Free, Pro, and Max: you add it yourself. Free plans are limited to one custom connector.
ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Edu: a workspace admin creates and publishes the app, then each user connects. Pro: you connect it yourself. Full MCP support, including create actions, is in beta on Business, Enterprise, and Edu, and is web only. Pro users can connect with read access only.
Claude Code You, from the command line. No admin setup needed.
Other MCP clients You, in the client's MCP settings. The client must support remote MCP servers with OAuth.

Anrok isn't listed in the Claude or ChatGPT connector directories yet, so it appears with a Custom label after you add it by URL. This is expected.

If someone else manages your Claude or ChatGPT workspace, send them this article along with this note:

"We'd like to connect Anrok, our sales tax provider, to our Claude / ChatGPT workspace. The setup takes about five minutes: add a custom connector with the URL https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp, leave authentication as OAuth, and publish it. Each person then signs in with their own Anrok login, so access is limited to what they can already see in Anrok. Nothing needs to be installed or allowlisted. Steps are in the linked article."

How signing in works

Every client uses the same sign-in flow, and you never paste an API key.

  1. Your AI client opens Anrok's sign-in page in your browser. If you're already signed in to Anrok, this step is skipped.
  2. Choose the Anrok account you want to connect.
  3. Review the permissions your assistant is requesting, then click Allow.
  4. Your client returns to its own window and shows Anrok as connected.

Note CleanShot_2024-04-30_at_16.01.40_2x-removebg-preview.png

Each connection is tied to one Anrok account. If you manage multiple entities, connect to the entity you want to work with. To switch, disconnect Anrok in your AI client and connect again, choosing the other account at sign-in.

Connect with Claude

How you add Anrok depends on your Claude plan.

Team and Enterprise plans

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner or Primary Owner adds the connector once for the organization:

  1. Go to Organization settings > Connectors.
  2. Click Add, then Custom. If Claude asks for the connector type, choose Web.
  3. Enter Anrok as the name and https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp as the MCP server URL.
  4. Leave the authentication settings as Claude detects them. If you see OAuth Client ID and OAuth Client Secret fields, leave both blank.
  5. Click Add.

Each user then connects their own Anrok account:

  1. Go to Customize > Connectors and find Anrok (labeled Custom).
  2. Click Connect, sign in to Anrok, choose your account, then click Allow.

Free, Pro, and Max plans

  1. Go to Customize > Connectors.
  2. Click Add custom connector.
  3. Enter Anrok as the name and https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp as the MCP server URL. Leave the authentication settings as Claude detects them.
  4. Click Add, then Connect. Sign in to Anrok, choose your account, then click Allow.

Use Anrok in a chat

Once Anrok is connected, turn it on for a conversation.

  1. In a new chat, click the + button, then open Connectors.
  2. Turn on Anrok for the conversation.
  3. Ask a question — for example, "Which of my returns are due this month?"

Claude asks for your approval before running tools that create or change data, unless you choose Always allow. To block specific tools entirely, go to Customize > Connectors, select Anrok, and set the tool's permission to Blocked. Team and Enterprise Owners can block tools for the whole organization under Organization settings > Connectors.

Connect with ChatGPT

Full MCP support in ChatGPT is in beta, works on ChatGPT web only, and how you set it up depends on your plan.

Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans

On these plans, a workspace admin or owner sets up the app once:

  1. Turn on developer mode. Go to Workspace settings > Permissions & Roles > Connected Data and enable Developer mode / Create custom MCP connectors.
    • On Business plans, each admin turns this on for themselves.
    • On Enterprise and Edu plans, admins grant access here, and each enabled user then turns it on under Settings > Apps > Advanced settings. If Apps are turned off for your Enterprise or Edu workspace, enable them first.
  2. Go to Workspace settings > Apps, then click Create.
  3. Enter Anrok as the name and https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp as the MCP server URL. For authentication, choose OAuth.
  4. Click Scan Tools. Sign in to Anrok when prompted, choose your account, click Allow, then wait for the scan to finish.
  5. Click Create. The app appears under Workspace settings > Apps > Drafts, where you can test it in a new chat before publishing.
  6. Go to Drafts, then click Publish. Review the warning about write actions and confirm.
    • Enterprise and Edu admins can use Configure Actions to choose which Anrok actions are allowed, and Configure Access to choose which groups get the app.

Each user then connects their own Anrok account:

  1. In a new chat, select Anrok from the tools menu, or @mention it in your message.
  2. Sign in to Anrok when prompted, choose your account, then click Allow.

Note CleanShot_2024-04-30_at_16.01.40_2x-removebg-preview.png

ChatGPT freezes an app's tool list when it's published. When Anrok releases new tools, an Enterprise or Edu admin can pull them in from Workspace settings > Apps, then the app's (...) > Action control > Refresh. New actions are turned off by default. On Business plans, the admin recreates and republishes the app.

Pro plans

ChatGPT Pro users can connect the Anrok MCP server in developer mode with read access only. Create actions aren't available on individual plans.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Advanced settings, then turn on Developer mode.
  2. Under Apps, click Create. Enter Anrok as the name and https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp as the MCP server URL, choose OAuth, then complete the Anrok sign-in.
  3. In a new chat, select Anrok from the tools menu.

Note CleanShot_2024-04-30_at_16.01.40_2x-removebg-preview.png

App selection in ChatGPT applies to the message where you use it, not the whole conversation. @mention Anrok again when a follow-up question needs new data from your account.

For more, see ChatGPT's documentation on developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT.

Connect with Claude Code

You can add the Anrok server from your terminal — no admin setup needed. Run the following command:

claude mcp add --transport http anrok https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp

To make Anrok available in every project instead of only the current one, add --scope user after add.

Then, authenticate in Claude Code:

  1. Run /mcp.
  2. Select anrok, then choose Authenticate. Sign in to Anrok in your browser, choose your account, then click Allow.
  3. Run /mcp again to confirm Anrok shows as connected.

For more, see Claude Code's documentation on connecting Claude Code to tools via MCP.

Connect with other MCP clients

The Anrok MCP server is a remote server that uses Streamable HTTP transport and OAuth 2.1. Any client that supports remote MCP servers with OAuth can connect to it. In general:

  1. Find where your client manages MCP servers or connectors, then add a new remote server.
  2. Enter https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp as the URL. If asked for a transport type, choose HTTP (Streamable HTTP), not SSE.
  3. If asked for an authentication method, choose OAuth. You don't need a client ID, client secret, or API key.
  4. Complete the Anrok sign-in in your browser, choose your account, then click Allow.

For example, in the OpenAI Codex CLI:

codex mcp add anrok --url https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp

Tip CleanShot_2024-04-30_at_15.47.03_2x-removebg-preview.png

If your client only supports local (stdio) MCP servers, you can bridge to Anrok with the open-source mcp-remote tool by using npx -y mcp-remote https://mcp.anrok.com/mcp as the server command. Anrok doesn't maintain this tool, so refer to its documentation for setup.
