Overview
A historical balance is an amount still owed to an global jurisdiction for a period that was filed before Anrok began filing your returns. This most commonly comes up shortly after you onboard to Anrok for global filing and remittance, when a VAT return filed by a previous tax provider turns out to have been underpaid. Because Anrok did not file the original return, the balance sits outside your standard filing cadence and is resolved through a separate process.
A few things to know before Anrok settles the balance:
- Balance verification — Anrok verifies the outstanding amount directly with the jurisdiction.
- Multiple periods — If you have multiple open periods in the same jurisdiction, Anrok can resolve them together.
- Incorrect filings — If the original return was filed or remitted incorrectly rather than simply underpaid, Anrok resolves the balance on a case-by-case basis, depending on how it can be corrected with the jurisdiction — and will confirm the right approach with you before proceeding.
How you settle the balance depends on whether you'd prefer to pay the jurisdiction yourself or have Anrok handle the remittance:
| Pay the jurisdiction directly | Have Anrok remit on your behalf |
|
Choose this option if you'd prefer to handle the remittance yourself. Anrok provides you with the jurisdiction's banking details, including IBAN or SWIFT details, the required payment reference format, and the confirmed balance in local currency. Once you've wired the payment, send Anrok your proof of payment. Anrok then confirms with the jurisdiction that the balance has cleared and lets you know once your account is up to date. |
Choose this option if you'd prefer not to arrange the wire yourself. Anrok treats the balance like a historical return and converts and remits it for you through our standard VAT remittance process. Because the balance is paid in the jurisdiction's local currency, an FX rate is locked in and the amount is converted with a buffer that is refunded once the funds are successfully remitted. Standard FX and bank processing fees also apply. |
